Criminal Record season 3: Is it renewed, canceled at Apple TV?

Following the big season 2 finale on Apple TV today, is there a chance that a Criminal Record season 3 could ultimately happen?

As is often the case with a show like this, there are a multitude of different variables to weigh out. Let’s just start here with some of what we know at present: The streaming service has not announced what the future will be for the Peter Capaldi – Cush Jumbo series. It could be back for another chapter but at the same time, it could also be canceled.

If you are thinking about Criminal Record in terms of viewership alone, it is easy to argue that this could be the final season. While Apple does not release specific viewing figures, season 2 has consistently ranked lower on their top ten charts than some of their other big hits including Your Friends & Neighbors, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, For All Mankind, and Widow’s Bay. However, at the same time you could argue that it may be more cost-effective and by virtue of that, easier to bring back for more.

Another component to the decision here may simply be buzz. Is there a reason to creatively bring the series back? That is something that remains, at least for now, a little bit harder in order to figure out. Technically, you could have argued that the first season worked as a singular chapter in its own right, so this show does not necessarily have to keep going to feel whole.

When could we hear more about the future?

Odds are, Apple will spend at least a couple of months working to figure this out. They are not a broadcast network with specific quotas to hit, so they have the luxury of being at least a little bit more patient here.
