Mrs Carter: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Ricky Gervais and his partner Jane Fallon have been in a serious relationship for almost 30 years and while they are very happy together, the couple has no desire to get married.
The comedian says that he sees no point in getting married, because their relationship has worked perfectly for almost 3 decades just the way it is, so why get married? He said;
“I don’t see the point. We are married in everything but the ceremony. We share everything and everything is in both names. We’ve lived together for 29 years — how are we not married except in the eyes of God? It’s just irrelevant. Our ‘marriage’ has lasted longer than most marriages.”
When it comes to the topic of children, the couple decided long ago that it wasn’t something they wanted. Ricky explains;
“We’ve both decided that we don’t want them. I love kids and my niece and nephews but, when they start grizzling, you can walk away from them. And they’re sponges for the first 16 years, too.”
It is interesting that society still puts pressure on couples to get married, as if making the verbal commitment to be together isn’t enough and that there is ultimately another step to take. More and more couples are choosing not to get married and not to have children, so we have to ask – why isn’t being in a committed relationship enough for a modern society?
