Box office results: ‘Tower Heist’ opens soft; ‘Puss in Boots’ the leader

The early projections from the box office are in, and it looks like we could very well have a major surprise — despite “Tower Heist” being the new release and boasting a cast that includes the likes of Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, a certain “Puss in Boots” has done a remarkable job of holding up in theaters, and is likely to finish #1.

As of right now, “Puss” is expected to gross $28 million for the weekend, which would mark a drop of less than 20% from its $34 million opening. One of the reasons for this may simply be that many theaters were closed last week due to weather, so for the northeast this is pretty much an opening weekend all over again.

However, the $25 million for “Heist” is below expectations for the $80 million film. It did end up winning Friday night, but “Puss” is expected to do much better business this weekend thanks to families.

Meanwhile, “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” is doing rather well for itself. For now, the movie (which only cost $20 million to make) is on pace to earn just over $14 million — and it should hold up pretty well as we near the holiday season.

What are you seeing this weekend?
