All season long, “The X Factor” has been a personal favorite target of mockery, and often for good reason. The show can be cheesy at times, and often tries to make itself out to be some sort of self-important monster of a show.
But, you have to give props when there is a genuinely good performance, and we had that last night with Alex & Sierra’s version of A Great Big World’s “Say Something.” This may be a song that actually is featured on some year-end lists for the Best Performance on a Competition Show (including our own coming up in our Best of 2013 series), and the public is clearly responding to it in a way that they really haven’t for any cover that we can think of in the history of the show.
The duo’s version of the song hit #1 on iTunes today, passing the Pitbull hit “Timber” featuring Ke$ha. This is a huge achievement for the two of them, and something that they will probably remember for the rest of their lives regardless of if they win this competition (which they really should) or get signed after the fact. This will probably also be a massive boost for the show itself, given that this could attract some new viewers who liked their cover, and maybe want to hear what they do next. It’s the first real round of good publicity Simon Cowell’s had almost all fall, in between the falling ratings and the whole situation with Lauren Silverman.
For Alex & Sierra, the challenge is going to be trying to go back into the show next week with two more performances, and not let the sudden success of this get to their heads. It would be easy to fall into a trap and just do some more ballads with Sierra at the piano, but they have to continue being innovative with their music the rest of the way. This is where Simon as a mentor will help them dramatically since he is a guy who, for better or worse, has dealt with many successful artists facing big challenges.
