Fox actually thinking about an ‘X Factor’ USA renewal … but why?

The latest -The following news may surprise you: “The X Factor” is not necessarily six feet under just yet.

There’s no getting around the fact that the ratings for the show this season are terrible, and we recently publicly shamed Simon Cowell for caring so much about launching pop acts that gobble up money that he has forgotten about actually making a good show in the process. That has been the biggest problem with the series more so than any of its talent (though that has been at times questionable this year): The show’s just not fun to watch. Mario Lopez is an unsympathetic host, and while Demi Lovato and Kelly Rowland have been solid on the judges’ panel, Paulina Rubio has been a bust, and both she and Simon have seemed at times so checked-out at times that they barely remember who their contestants are.

Entertainment Weekly reports that there are talks to bring back the show, but for a much smaller slate of episodes than the one currently on the air. We still would love to see something that was more of a revolution to the genre, where we saw Simon and some other record executives guide contestants through the actual process behind the scenes before performing. We don’t need auditions or results shows, but we do need something to make this feel different.

The reasons that Fox could consider this primarily have to do with the rotten state of their own schedule. “Bones” flopped hard on Fridays last week, “Almost Human” is already at disappointing ratings, and save for “Sleepy Hollow,” this hasn’t been a good year for the network. Bringing back this show and shortening it at least gives the network something that they can tweak to save money, and also run some in-show ads during to cut costs. An hour or two a week, versus three, is not the same sort of investment.

Despite all of our venom over the show, we know that it can work given how much fun that we find the British show to be. It just needs a better host, and four panelists who all realize that this is entertainment more than some sort of vocal Hunger Games where contestants constantly look like they are on the verge of tears.
