It was not as earth-shattering as many expected, but “Puss in Boots” can take some solace in the fact that it did manage to break records as the top-earning Halloween movie of all time.
Overall, the animated movie from DreamWorks (which eatures the likes of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek) brought in $34 million for the weekend — beating the previous record of $33.6 million for “Saw III.” Business for all movies this weekend was hampered mightily by a snowstorm across the northeast, so expect many films to hold over well as audiences members in New York and New Jersey venture out to see these flicks next weekend.
Now, here’s the rest of the top 5:
2. “Paranormal Activity 3” ($18.5 million) – We all thought the movie would all dramatically, but 65% is still a shockingly steep decline considering that Halloween in Monday. Then again the movie currently has over $80 million in the bank — 18 times its production budget.
3. “In Time” ($12 million) – This is a disappointment for a Justin Timberlake-led movie — but once again, weather played a role.
4. “Footloose” ($5.4 million) – The remake has held on fairly well over the past few weeks, as it now nears $40 million.
5. “The Rum Diary” ($5 million) – The dud of the week. Johnny Depp’s latest movie currently only has one-tenth of its budget in the bank.
