The early returns are in for the Friday box office, and it looks like at the moment everything is going to open a little bit lower than expected — and we may in many ways have a snowstorm hitting the northeast to thank for that.
“Puss in Boots” led the weekend with $9.6 million — which does put it on pace for an opening frame of around $36 million (which would be a record for Halloween weekend). The problem? This movie cost $150 million to make, and many were hoping it would score an opening over $40 million.
Elsewhere, the results are going to range. “Paranormal Activity” is currently on pace to make close to $20 million for the weekend — a drop of around 60% from its monster opening frame last week. (However, it’s already a massive hit.) New movies “In Time” and “The Rum Diary,” meanwhile, are not doing so well — with the Justin Timberlake movie likely to open with around $13 million while Depp will be lucky to see $6 million. This news is particularly bad for “Rum Diary,” which cost $50 million to make. (Thankfully, Depp’s films typically become hits overseas.)
Are you heading to the movies this weekend?
