Box office results: ‘Paranormal Activity 3’ sets October record

The total receipts are in for the weekend, and “Paranormal Activity 3” somehow managed to scare up even more money than we even expected — and set a pair of records in the process.
Overall, the newest installment in the horror franchise brought in an astounding $54 million for the weekend. Not only is this $10 million more than how the second installment did in 2010, but it also managed to set a pair of records — largest October opening ever as well as best opening ever for a horror film. In total, the movie has made $80 million worldwide, which is 16 times its tiny $5 million budget.
As for the other big-time new release of the weekend, “The Three Musketeers” managed to barely make much of an imprint behind “Real Steel” and “Footloose” at #4. Milla Jovovich was right to criticize Summit Entertainment for its weak promotion, as $8.8 million is terrible for a $90 million film. (It has grossed $50 million so far overseas with different distrtibutors.)
