We all thought that “Paranormal Activity 3” was going to pull in some fantastic money the weekend before Halloween — but who thought it would earn back this much money so far?
The new installment in the horror franchise successfully managed to earn $26 million on Friday (including midnight showings), which is leading early predictors to say that it will reach the $50 million milestone by the end of the weekend. It’s not likely to do as strong of business either Saturday or Sunday, but either way this is the best opening for a film since “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in August. The other benefit here? “Paranormal” only cost $5 million to make.
As for the other new releases, “The Three Musketeers” is set to only gross around $8-10 million in the #4 spot (behind “Footloose” and “Real Steel”) — a sign that Milla Jovovich may have been right when she blasted Summit Entertainment for a lack of promotion. As for “Johnny English Reborn,” expect a total of only around $4 million for the weekend. You can call this a dud if you’d like, but the movie has already become a massive hit worldwide (including areas where Rowan Atkinson is more popular).
Have you visited the movies this weekend?
