Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina bring ‘American Idol’ presence to album chart

Scotty held on pretty well.

If you enjoyed this season of “American Idol,” there is some good news at the moment courtesy of the just-announced Billboard 200 chart.

For the first time in three years, we have a situation unfolding where both the winner and the runner-up from the past season are in the top five in terms of album sales simultaneously.

Season 10 champ Scotty McCreery led the way this week at #4 with 88,000 additional copies sold of his “Clear As Day” debut, which is a decline of about 55% from his opening frame (which gave him a #1 debut). Meanwhile, runner-up Lauren Alaina’s new album “Wildflower” debuted with 69,000 units sold. This is a slight improvement on Crystal Bowersox’s debut from last year, but this is worth watching since Crystal’s “Farmer’s Daughter” actually held on pretty well from week to week.

If nothing else, it seems at the moment that this past season of “Idol” did get what it genuinely needed — someone who can go out from the gate selling albums in large quantities. If you are wondering who actually topped the charts this week, the honor goes to Evanescence with their return to the music scene. Adele, meanwhile, continued to hang on incredibly well at #2.
