We are starting to get our first real numbers of the weekend at the box office, and it seems like we are ultimately going to see “Footloose” dance away with the crowd.
The Julianne Hough remake grossed $5.57 million in its first day in theaters Friday, and at the moment seems likely to get close to $20 million for the weekend overall. Considering that viewers have handed the movie an A CinemaScore, word of mouth could cause the film to rise even higher than that.
Elsewhere, the Hugh Jackman movie “Real Steel” also fared well in its second weekend, pulling in $4.7 million on Friday. While a weekend gross of somewhere between $15-16 million would mark a drop from its $27 million opening, it’s really not so bad for an action movie of this variety.
As for the weekend’s other new releases, the remake of “The Thing” looks primed to gross about $10 million for the weekend — as for “The Big Year,” expect this to be another live-action movie with Owen Wilson to disappoint. So far, the movie (which also stars Steve Martin and Jack Black) looks to gross $4 million for the weekend.
