Then, when an opportunity arises (no pun intended) I can ‘rise to the occasion’ (pun intended) and ‘prove’ that I am NOT the killer.

If I were a dumb and reckless killer I would divulge a very pertinent and identifying fact about myself to a psychiatrist, even though I knew I was planning to kill her.

I don’t think Red John is dumb or reckless.
