There is not going to be much of a race this weekend for the #1 crown at the box office — but based on some of the current totals, the real question is going to be whether or not certain expectations are met.
The first example of this comes courtesy of “Real Steel.” The robot boxing movie (crazy as that sounds) is now on pace to gross $24 million thanks to an $8.6 million first day — but this is a bit lower than the $30 million-plus many were expecting prior to Friday. (The movie also has that $110 million price tag to contend with.)
On a different note, “The Ides of March” is pretty much guaranteed to be profitable. The political film with Ryan Gosling and George Clooney grossed $3.5 million for a #2 opening on Friday, but its $12.5 million budget could theoretically be made back by the end of the weekend if audiences turn out the rest of the weekend.
As for the undisputed winner of the weekend, there’s really only one title worth naming — “The Lion Kind (in 3D).” Despite being a re-release, being out in theaters for several weeks now, and releasing the Blu-Ray earlier this week (which the theatrical release was originally just a promotional tool for), the movie still brought in $1.2 million at #8.
Check back on Sunday for the full weekend numbers!
