Following the shocking (and enormous) success of “The Lion King (in 3D),” Disney is doing what is both a smart and predictable thing moving forward — giving the same sort of theatrical treatment to some of their other classics in this format.
For now, here is the tentative schedule of some of the movie studio’s releases:
“Beauty and the Beast” – January 13, 2012
“Finding Nemo” – September 14, 2012
“Monsters, Inc.” – January 18, 2013
“The Little Mermaid” – September 13, 2013
There are a few things of particular note with these release dates — first of all, the House of Mouse is sticking to releasing these films in months that traditionally see a decline in attendance (meaning that they are hoping to capitalize on a lack of competition). Two of these films (“Beauty and the Best” and “The Little Mermaid”) are ready to be embraced by a new generation of filmgoers, and you can justify “Monsters, Inc” by saying that the prequel film, “Monsters University,” also is coming out in 2013. As for “Finding Nemo,” the argument is simple — the movie made over $800 million the first time, so you might as well give it another go.
Which one of these movies would you be the most excited to see in 3D?
