Despite a slew of new movies entering the box office race this weekend, it looks as though we are going to have a feeling of deja vu this weekend — “Moneyball,” “Dolphin Tale,” and “The Lion King (in 3D)” are all going to be vying for the box office crown.
For the time being, all three movies are expected to gross somewhere between $12 and $13 million — though this is most impressive for “The Lion King” thanks to this being its third week in theaters (not to mention that it is a re-release). All three films seem to be holding up incredibly well versus last weekend, which is especially good news considering that most of the new releases are underwhelming.
Out of the new movies in theaters this weekend, the surprising star seems to be the Christian movie “Courageous” — which is boosted by some strong pre-show sales. For now, it seems prime for a finish at $9 million — though Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt may end up taking it down for #4 with “50/50.”
Meanwhile, the dud of the weekend seems to be “What’s Your Number?” with Anna Faris — which, despite an extensive marketing campaign, is only expected to gross $5.5 million.
What are you planning to see?
