Box office results: ‘Moneyball’ ahead, but ‘The Lion King’ still roaring

Who would have thought that a re-release of an animated film would still be doing so well? While estimates from the Friday box office suggest that Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball” is going to end up winning the weekend crown at the box office, “The Lion King 3D” is proving to be strong competition just one week after it shocked the world by opening to $20 million.

For Friday, “Moneyball” took in a solid $6.75 million, and should finish the weekend with around $20 million in the bank. However, “The Lion King” could end up passing it thanks to family audiences coming out in full force over the weekend. It once again had the best per-screen average in the top ten, and could have $60 million in the bank at the end of the weekend.

We still cannot count out “Dolphin Tale,” though, when it comes to being a contender. Although it only grossed $5.1 million on Friday, it has an incredibly CinemaScore of an A+ — meaning just about everyone who has watched it has loved it. The last movie to pull this off was “The Help,” and it has over $150 million in the bank.

Also worth mentioning — both “Abduction” and “Killer Elite” should finish the weekend with a gross between $9 and $11 million. However, the total for the first film is a bit of a letdown since it stars “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner.

What are you planning to see this weekend?
