A lot of people are saying Alexander Skarsgard, Anna Paquin, and Stephen Moyer don't want to do the show anymore and that's fine because we really don't know the truth behind anything because nobody has not spoken. The way his character was written with a zest for life, mischievous, deadly, and very loyal to his friends and family, I don't see him going out like Godric. His character allowed the show not to be boring because you never know what he'd do or say in any given situation. The gossip on the block is he will be back for season 7 with him and Pam having their own story line, it would be nice to see a spin off for the show with the intent of answering the questions you asked. The actor Alexander Skarsgard draws a lot of fans because he is just like us we want our privacy, we like to have fun without scrutiny, and who cares who is keeping us warm at night as long as we are content. The character of Eric Northman drew in fans because the writers that wrote his character always had the audience off balance and he rose to the occasion. He is one of the few actors that I can truly say I wish him luck in all his endeavors.

Eric has strong ties to Pam, Sookie, and Willa. The idea that he would just abandon them is ridiculous. He's always been written as a survivor who values life above all. But the character development, such as it was, in the finale was so bizarre I have no idea what the writers intend. There was such a lack of logical character development or reasoned plotting I am really at a loss. I have absolutely no faith in the writers at this point.
