The best auditions on a reality show are always the ones that you don’t see coming — and on “The X Factor” Thursday night, we saw one of the most memorable tryouts we have seen in some time.
Dexter Haygood came out on stage looking a bit like a joke with his platform shoes and James Brown impersonation — but underneath all of that, there was a special singer with a memorable story of struggle and triumph. Simon Cowell gave him a chance to sing an additional song, and his cover of “It’s a Man’s World” sealed the deal.
Will Dexter go for in this competition? It’s hard to tell, mainly because this isn’t “America’s Got Talent,” and he will have to show some musical diversity as he goes along. But no matter what, this is a great story that we hope to follow the rest of the season. (Now, we just have to hope that the show surrounding him finds a way to get more exciting — a big production is nothing if your show feels too much like “AGT” during the audition rounds.)
What did you think of Dexter’s audition?
