The search for the next “American Idol” judge appears to be just about over now … and it turns out that some of the recent rumored names, including Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, appear to be moot.
According to a report from Deadline, producer Dr. Luke, who is partially responsible for such hits as Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” and Katy Perry’s “California Gurls,” is closing a deal now to serve as the third judge on the show alongside Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez. We’re sure that he will be a polarizing choice, but we still find it hilarious that many people complaining about big stars are now complaining about a guy who they automatically perceive will be boring. Give the guy a shot.
What’s really not clear is whether or not Dr. Luke was on the list of contenders at the start of the search, especially when you remember that people like will.i.am, Kanye West, former contestant Adam Lambert, and Diddy were all attached to the show via rumors at some point. The Black Eyed Peas frontman was even at one point in talks, but negotiations broke down and he opted to return to “The Voice” UK instead. We would have rather seen Adam than Luke, but the show could have done a lot worse here if this booking turns out to be confirmed. He at least knows music very well, and is not simply going to be there to self-promote or get into battles with the other judges.
This move is not going to get viewers right away, though; the only thing that they can hope for is that “American Idol” this year is a great show, and the audience builds via word-of-mouth.
