They put the three in a situation where its a matter of life and death: Dexter will once again choose Debra over Hannah only this time… her life over Hannah’s and his. Only, by being aware that if he die and he has not had time to save Hannah, at least he has chosen (perhaps unconsciously) to die with her if destiny will. With such an ending, I presume that the Debster’s fan will be less please by that because of Hannah in the way.
