Mathew was probably , in my estimation, the most significant character in the story. Unlike with Cybil’s death, the audience could not grieve with the characters as we wanted to. Mathew was so loved by all. He was the glue. He was the steady one , the wise and compassionate son in law who could stand up to Robert but not in an arrogant way. He was Toms’ mentor and friend. He was gentle with Mary and firm. He was the perfect compliment to her tendency to be mean and spiteful. He was a defender of the weak. If I were the writer I would have at least given us the viewer to mourn. Cybil’s death was one of the most powerful and well acted scenes in tv drama, right alongside Gus’ death in lonesome dove. If your going to spend all that time to develop a character and have your audience fall in love with him then let the audience experience the pain the characters most assuredly would have felt.
