Box office results: ‘Contagion’ dominates ‘The Help,’ everything else

It’s #1.

We have our first score of results in from the American box office, and they prove one thing above all else — “Contagion” is really making a killing when it comes to pure dollars and sense.

On Friday, the ensemble film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and others brought in just over $8 million to finish at the top of the list. Thanks in part to the all-star cast, the movie should easily pass $20 million for its opening weekend — with largely positive reviews boosting its chances at having some decent longevity. (It will need to do so, considering that the production budget stands around $60 million.)

As for “The Help,” the sleeper hit of the year still held on fairly well in the #2 spot — and should beat new movie “Warrior” (despite some positive word of mouth on that end) with close to $8 million in the bank for the weekend.

When it comes to the bomb of the weekend, there’s no questioning that the honor belongs to “Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.” Despite being from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company and costing only $10 million to make, its $540,000 total on Friday put it out of the top ten — and it’s not even likely to gross $2 million for the weekend.

What are you planning to see this weekend?
