The yin and yang of Ryan’s and Joe’s relationship is at the heart of this show, at least as far as I’m concerned, and without Joe Carroll, as embodied by the incomparable James Purefoy, it would end up as just another ho-hum good guys versus bad guys trip. If they have decided to kill him off, but continue to utilize Joe in flashback format, it would still be a loss, IMO. Joe is the puppet master, and none of the other followers can replace him in that role. I want to see him continue to pull the strings and not just show up in some flashback from previous years.
