‘Doctor Who’ season 8 debate: Should Matt Smith’s replacement be a revolution?

Doctor WhoWe are in a little bit of an interesting position right now when it comes for the search of the next “Doctor Who”. Rather than seeing a list of strictly people who are right for the role, should demographics should also be considered? Is it time for the first black Doctor, or the first female version of the character?

What we do think is getting lost in the discussion is what is really important about this search. Whoever plays The Doctor should be someone who is not only a cornerstone of the franchise, but also ready to take on the expectations that go with it.

It is interesting to see some of the names that are floating around out there right now. Chiwetel Ejiofor, a very fine actor, would be an excellent choice to be the character, and it has more do with that rather than what his race is. The same goes for some other current favorites, such as “Being Human” star Russell Tovey. As for a female Doctor, it could be interesting, but you would need to not only pick the right person, but the right companion. (This is probably unlikely, mostly for the same reason that we have yet to see a female James Bond.)

The show does not have to necessarily go for a big name, and instead ask themselves the following questions:

1. Is the actor passionate about the part?

2. Do they have great chemistry with Steven Moffat and the cast?

3. Are they willing to stay on for at least a couple of years?
