I believe that John Hurt is the guy we have already seen in the episode The Doctor’s Daughter. This episode was in the 10th series and I believe John Hurt was the leader f the human group in that episode. This is the episode where the humans are in a war with the Hath.

POSSIBLE BOOK SPOILERS
according to the books and rumors when the 7th dr was taken off the air, Gallifrey history was to be addressed, specifically a possible Gallifreyan but it hasn’t been confirmed simply named the Other because no one remembers his name. It was the Other that jumped into a machine called the loom, and then the loom spit out the Doctor. When the Pythia was forced off Gallifrey they cursed all Gallifreyans with not being able to have children. SOme gallifreyan possibly rassion came up with a machine called the Loom and that is how time lords reproduced. The Other was always a shadowy guy, but he had a granddaughter named Susan somehow. Rassilon started to demand things of the other until finally he ordered his guards to come after him, he runs to the room the has the loom and jumps into the machine, then he becomes the Doctor. Now I would absolutely LOVE IT if this is what’s going to happen in the series, if you have not seen the Name of the Doctor (no I won;t spoil it) I for one as a hardcore Dr who fan was NOT disappointed, and hope that Moffat stays for a very long time!
