We have been hearing for quite some time that Amy Winehouse was going to be given some sort of proper tribute during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, and it happened courtesy of two people who came to know the “Rehab” singer well during the later years of her life — Russell Brand and Tony Bennett.
If you have already read Brand’s statement on his website about his relationship with Amy, then most of his comments are going to feel rather familiar — what was new, meanwhile, was hearing legendary vocalist Tony Bennett come out and describe what it was likely working with Amy for a duet off of his new album. Both parties gave touching tributes to Amy, and also tried to keep the tone celebratory rather than merely sad.
Following this, Bruno Mars gave a rocking rendition to Amy’s classic song “Valerie” — if you want to read more about this, all you have to do is venture on over to the performance article to see our full impressions.
Do you think the VMAs did Amy justice with this tribute?
