Thanks to a massive storm currently working its way across the East Coast, this is going to end up being one of the worst weekends of the American box office in months. Understandably, people have more important things to do (like keep themselves safe) than seeing a movie, and right now it is expected that Hollywood could end up losing about $30 million as a result.
With the current estimates as they are, it looks as though Emma Stone and Viola Davis’ “The Help” movie is going to continue its reign at #1. However, its expected gross of $12-13 million is below original predictions.
Zoe Saldana’s new project “Columbiana” is expected to finish in the #2 spot, but Irene may keep it from grossing much more than just $10 million. Another new film (in “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”) is going to be lucky to make it to $10 million, and is more likely to finish at #3 with around $8.5 million in the bank.
As for the dud of the weekend, the honor goes to “Our Idiot Brother.” With only around $2.5 million in the bank following Friday, the movie is likely to end up at #5 with around $7.5 million for the weekend — hardly the #2 finish may people were hoping for.
Are you planning to hit up the movies this weekend?
