‘American Idol’ surprise: Lee DeWyze returning Thursday to perform new single

American IdolThis year, “American Idol” is being kind to some of its season 9 stars. Weeks after  Casey James stopped by for his first performance on the show since the end of his season in 2010, Lee DeWyze will be returning for his first performance on a results show since early on in season 10 back in 2011.

In a post on Twitter Monday, Lee confirmed that he would be back on his old stomping grounds in order to perform “Silver Lining,” his excellent new single off of his upcoming Vanguard Records release. For whatever reason the show waited a little while longer to announce the guests for this week and although it’s still not official, we hear that both Ariana Grande and Fall Out Boy are also slated to appear (which should appeal to either teens or nostalgic emo rock fans … and it’s weird that we’re using Fall Out Boy and nostalgic in the same sentence).

Lee’s single currently has a release date of June 11, and there is no confirmed date just yet for his upcoming album. He has spent most of this year alternating between recording and playing gigs across America, including a recent one at the famous Viper Room.

Some other “American Idol” performers from this season have included Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Scotty McCreery, Jessica Sanchez, Colton Dixon, and of course reigning champ Phillip Phillips. Some of the biggest omissions that we can think of thus far are Adam Lambert (who has been mostly overseas, so he hasn’t had many opportunities), Crystal Bowersox (who does have some new music out), and Lauren Alaina (who has also been working on some new tunes).
