‘Shark Tank’ review: Geek Chic, LugLess, Jones Scones, Stella Valle

Shark TankWe’re going to start this article by saying that we realize that Friday night’s “Shark Tank” was preempted in most of the United States due to coverage of the Boston Marathon manhunt. Of course, our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with everyone affected by this tragic situation, and we hope that a time of peace and healing can now begin.

However, this is a television news site, and there is in our mind a certain essence of healing that can be found in escapism, especially in an inspirational show like this one. We’re covering this tonight based off of the Canadian feed, so if you have yet to see the show this week and want to remain unspoiled, you may want to stop reading now. As always with our reviews, we have links to each of the individual products to go along with analysis.

Jones Scones – First of all, we love the name. We also love the fact that there is someone out there willing to sell scones in a mass market. What this guy really needed was exposure, and he probably got it here just by bringing his scones to TV. It’s nearly impossible to get a shark to invest in this sort of thing, though: there’s nothing original about it, and the fact that he had already had a manufacturing failure was a big red flag.

LugLess – In theory, this is the sort of product that does fill a need, and could be success: a baggage system that really allows consumers to ship their bags without ever having to worry about the hassle of dealing with airports. Could we see this being effective for some? Sure, but at the same time there are a myriad of issues. There are enormous competitors including FedEx, and we find that some people still prefer to just take their bags with them the standard way, even with the big fees and the possibility of them getting lost. The only major advantage here is that you can get them shipped straight to your hotel, so there is no waiting at a baggage claim.

Geek Chic – This guy was certainly quirky enough to fit the bill as a “geek,” and his product is something that we’d personally love to have: a table with multiple functions. It’s actually rather useful even if you’re not a geek, but you just don’t have much space in your house. The only major flaw that we see here is that for most middle-class Americans, $3,000+ is still quite a bit of money to spend on a table, but he did manage to get a good partner for his business in Robert Herjavec that will help to market him as a brand that should sell well in a certain market.

Stella Valle – This is a product that we first wrote about in our preview, and it something that we honestly don’t know much about as someone who doesn’t wear much jewelry. However, the idea of a product designed to empower women created by Army Officers is appealing, and that alone is something that could attract potential customers. Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner made them a pretty phenomenal offer of $150,000 for 35% of the company, and they were of course smart to take it.
