China has decided to ban certain songs they deem inappropriate from some of the country’s most popular artists.
The government banned websites that feature roughly 100 songs from artists like Lady Gaga, The Backstreet Boys and Katy Perry.
Officials have said that the ban is aimed to regulate the “order” of the music that is available on the internet and said that songs that “harm the security of state culture must be cleaned up and regulated under the law”.
Although songs like Lady Gaga’s ‘The Edge of Glory’, ‘Hair’ and ‘Marry the Night’ were on the banned list, there was no explanation on why these particular songs were chosen.
Also on the list is British pop group Take That, The Backstreet Boys, Simple Plan, Katy Perry and Beyonce.
Since 2010 China requires that any songs that are posted on music websites are to receive approval prior to them being posted. The government says that the move is aimed partially at cleaning up piracy.
