‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 8 spoilers: A tiny (but important) finale question

How I Met Your Mother

Update: Carter Bays has since come out and said that the title is actually just “Something New.” There is no question mark.

Back when we heard that the penultimate episode of “How I Met Your Mother” season 8 was going to be entitled “Something Old,” it was pretty easy to guess the title for the finale based on the fact that season 2 already had a pair of episodes entitled “Something Borrowed” and “Something Blue” all about the Lily / Marshall wedding.

However, what we didn’t realize at the time of that report was that we were going to be seeing something extra added to the “Something New” episode title: a question mark. According to E! News, the actual title of the episode is “Something New?”, and as ridiculous as it sounds, this really does change quite a bit in terms of how we are supposed to read the title. Rather than sounding like something that signifies a sort of renewal or beginning, it instead now brings to mind feelings of uncertainty and doubt.

In some ways, this should not come as a surprise given that we already know during flash-forwards that both Barney and Robin are each going to have a few doubts about walking down the aisle. However, are we really even going to get to the wedding during the finale? Early buzz suggests that the finale begins around a week or so before the day, but the only way we don’t see ourselves getting there is if the show suddenly decides to adopt a non-linear structure for the ninth and final season and instead finds a different way to answer the question of “who is the mother?” before viewers start to slowly lose their minds.

What do you think that this simple question mark represents? If you want to read some more casting scoop for the “How I Met Your Mother” finale, you can do so over at the link here.
