The new showrunners want to give the series more heart, which has undercut it in some way. But getting Jeff back as a cynic was such a relief, even if he caved in the end. As for Pierce, you can’t blame Chevy for leaving (this might have been the episode that did it for him). The writers are, I think, taking it out on him for forcing Harmon out, to a great degree.
