On Saturday night’s UK premiere of “The X Factor,” new judges (including Kelly Rowland) could not ultimately change the fact that we were watching the same sort of formula show that we were checking out in the past. There were some funny moments, some major disasters, and at least one person that has us all completely spellbound.
For now, that person is Janet Devlin. She is just a 16-year old girl living in Northern Ireland, but may be some of the best undiscovered talent the show has seen yet. While she seems to lack the confidence of many past superstars, her voice is both stunning and unique — and she gave such a fascinating vulnerability to “Your Song” that it makes you want to root for her even more.
Usually with the under-18 crowd, you typically end up getting contestants who are either hokey or at times arrogant thanks to their parents telling them how good they are all the time — Devlin is neither, and she may be one of the most endearing contestants to ever appear on this show. Whether or not she will win is to be seen (and it’s far too early to predict) — but you have to think this audition is already winning her over plenty of votes.
As for other “contenders,” you could make the case that both Frankie Cocozza and Kitty Brucknell both have pretty good voices — but neither one of them was fantastic, and their personalities were not so easy to root for.
