On Thursday night, Lady Gaga made it official — she is going to be the one this year with the honor of opening the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. During a network special from Times Square, she actually let her “Little Monsters” make the announcement themselves by opening up a banner that proclaimed that she was going to have this all-important spot on the show.
For MTV, it is easy to understand why they want Gaga to be in this position — she was the talk of Hollywood last year for her meat dress and other costumes, and they will be desperate to see how exactly she is going to top herself. Meanwhile, Gaga actually has a far taller order — trying to one-up everything she has already done. Thanks to her status as a top-level entertainer, everyone already tends to expect the absolute best for her. It is going to be more than a little of a challenge to see if she can ultimately end up meeting these expectations — though if anyone has the creativity to pull it off, it is certainly her.
As of right now, it is likely that Gaga will take the stage to perform “You and I” — the latest single off of her album “Born This Way.”
Are you glad to see Gaga as the opening act?
