Katy Perry ties Billboard record; Kanye West and Jay-Z top album chart

There are a couple of stories worth talking about in the Billboard universe at the moment, but let’s begin with the news that may be the most historic — for the first time ever, we have a female artist with five #1 tracks on the Hot 100 from the same album.

This honor goes to Katy Perry, whose “Last Friday Night {T.G.I.F.)” reached this top of the chart this week after battling LMFAO and others the past few weeks. Considering that it is starting to lose spins on the radio, it’s unclear just how long it will last — but Katy still has an opportunity to savor this moment. This track joins “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” and “ET” as #1 hits, and Michael Jackson is the only other artist to ever accomplish this feat.

Katy took a moment out to post about the honor (understandably with glee) on Twitter:

“What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!”

When it comes to the album chart, meanwhile, Kanye West and Jay-Z also have something to be rather proud of — their “Watch the Throne” collaboration soldĀ 436,078 in its first incomplete week, which includes an iTunes first-week record of 290,000 digital albums.

Do you think Katy is deserving?
