Best way to sum up original song issue is this: producers pay to license the songs in their catalog, so they want to feel like they're getting their money's worth. That's why original songs often don't fly, and singers are steered away from tracks that have not been covered before on TV. It's a licensing issue; but yes, do agree that L.A. would have given them more flexibility like he did with Chris.

To the owner of this blog... Don't you think that Emblem3 would've been better off with LA Reid as a mentor? Look at what he did with Chris Rene and Astro last year? It was so exciting. He knows how to mentor true originals, though I don't agree with how he sent home David Correy. I think Simon Cowell is an opportunist. He cares nothing for artistic integrity, he's too focused on the commercial aspects. Emblem3 has admitted that they are not the best vocalists, but they are strong musicians, so, where are their instruments and original songs? Simon is doing those kids no good.
