Emma Stone, Viola Davis’ ‘The Help’ gets off to strong start

So far, so good.

Who knew that “The Help” would be such a major success in its first day at the box office? Disney and DreamWorks made the decision to open on Wednesday in order to generate word-of-mouth, and that certainly seems to be working.

The book adaptation (which stars Emma Stone and Viola Davis) raked in a projected $5-5.5 million at the box office on Wednesday, which is incredibly strong for a film of this kind and starring a largely-female cast. In addition, audiences gave the film an incredible A+ CinemaScore, which is only the second time this year (following “Soul Surfer”) that we have seen this happen.

With this opening in mind, strong word or mouth is likely to lead to this movie finishing this weekend with an opening of over $25 million.– while this may not be enough to get it to the top of the box office, it does have the potential to become one of the sleeper hits of the entire summer.
