When “Sons of Anarchy” showrunner Kurt Sutter made the choice to kill off a beloved character three episodes in to season 5, he knew that it was going to send shockwaves through the show’s fandom. However, the man still had the brass balls to make it happen.
There are all sorts of questions that really are worth asking in the aftermath of what transpired, but there is one that we believe is worth asking more than any other: why did Opie decide to ultimately be a sacrifice? Speaking in a new conference call with reporters, here is what executive producer Kurt Sutter had to say on this subject in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday:
“I do believe that some of it was a sense of, ‘Here’s an opportunity for me to go out doing the right thing, to be of best service to my club’ — and also to his family … Jax wasn’t going to force himself to make that choice [of who dies]. Opie saw that … and had to step in and make that choice.”
As we suggested a little earlier in the day, we do feel especially after hearing Sutter’s comments as though the death of Opie was in many ways a necessarily evil for the show; while it was painful to watch, it was was something that is going to be incredibly important to Jax’s story. There are presumably two seasons coming up after this one before this biker drama comes to a close, and in some ways you can say that this death was the set-up to what will ultimately be the endgame for SAMCRO and all of its crew.
Do you agree with Sutter’s assessment of why Opie made the decision to allow himself to be brutally mauled? Be sure to share your thoughts below, and check out our initial reaction to what happened over at the link here.
