For a brief moment on the season finale of “Once Upon a Time” this past May, we had a moment that suggested that Rumpelstiltskin was really going to have his happily ever after with Belle at his side. However, that was taken away from us pretty quickly courtesy of Robert Carlyle’s character releasing magic in the world.
Even though we see in a sneak peek for Sunday’s season premiere that Rumple is going to defend his actions by claiming that it is a move to protect both he and the woman he loves, Belle (Emilie de Ravin) is not going to completely agree. Just how may problems will this create? Speaking to TV Guide, executive producer Adam Horowitz gives us an interesting perspective into the head of Robert Carlyle’s character that we were not really thinking about beforehand:
“Gold is a meticulous man, as is Rumplestiltskin, and he had a plan that he has been enacting … The wild card was Belle because he never, ever thought she was going to be coming back, and he is a man who has, in the past, always chosen power over love. I think he’s on a mission, and here he has a second chance with the woman he always regretted letting go.”
Really, what we may therefore be looking at here is a “something’s gotta give” sort of situation; either Rumpelstiltskin has to adjust his plan with someone else in mind, or he has to figure out instead how to cast her aside in order to keep his focus on whatever it is that this mysterious guy is really trying to accomplish instead. One thing that we do know for sure? That Belle is not going to be going away anytime soon; de Ravin is a series regular for season 2, and will likely be around to play a role in Rumple’s life regardless of whether or not she is directly by his side.
