Despite all of the criticism surrounding former “Toddlers & Tiaras” star Alana Thompson and her quirky family, there’s really no question that the show has become a bona fide hit for TLC. Its 2.3 million viewers make it one of the network’s strongest shows, and before the season finale aired Wednesday night, the decision was made that this was going to function more as a summer finale rather than just the end of season 1. There will be more episodes coming up at some point early next year, and we are also going to see three specials themed around Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween.
In a statement, here is what TLC General Manager Amy Winter had to say:
“‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’ has become a pop culture phenomenon … What you see is what you get and we are excited to share even more of Alana and her family’s unbridled hilarity, sincerity and love with our viewers.”
As we have said before, there is really one concern that we have with this show pushing forward despite all of the criticism that has enveloped it over the years: Alana is going to get older, and part of the reason for the show’s appeal is that it involved a rambunctious kid and her family as they navigate the world of pageants, extreme couponing, and coming up with ridiculous names for each other. How funny will this really be if Alana is doing all of this when she is 10 or 11 years old? There’s probably also going to be a time when she really does not want to be called “Honey Boo Boo” anymore.
