‘The New Normal’ review: Ryan Murphy takes a chance with politics

For Tuesday night’s new episode of “The New Normal,” the show once again delved into politics; and while this was nice for Ryan Murphy as a way to prove that he can create a show that can represent all viewpoints, it also suffered from one thing in he process: it wasn’t really that funny.

In the end, this episode once again suffered under the weight of something that this show has struggled with from time to time in trying to justifying its own existence … not to mention the fact that the characters have a lifestyle that not everyone agrees with. This episode therefore really felt more like an instructional video than a comedy, where everyone took their expected positions and then fought about it. While Murphy did do a nice thing in showing that Nana is not a blood-sucking creature from the black lagoon simply because she is Republican, we would have rather seen an episode that focused more on the comedy, and a little bit less on the issues.

The only real moments of surprise came near the end of this episode, where the show actually unveiled two major revelations: an African-American who was voting for Mitt Romney, and also the fact that Goldie’s ex was suing her for custody of her daughter. This is going to set up an interesting story moving forward, but we just hope that it finds the funny that we know is there with these characters.

What did you think about this episode, and would you prefer this episode if it actually focused on staying funny rather than just reinforce its politics over and over again?
