There is some good news for all Tina Fey fans out there: even though the actress, writer, and producer may be done with “30 Rock” after the end of the show’s abbreviated seventh season, she is very much leaving the door open to a bevy of other exciting (and hopefully equally zany) project moving forward.
According to multiple sources, Fey has inked a new four-year contract with studio Universal Television to continue to develop ideas for them as she did with “30 Rock.” There is also an option in her contract for her to star in another series if she so chooses, which seems to be likely given her passion for acting.
While this news at least guarantees that Fey is going to have yet another kick at creating an award-winning TV show, there is one question that you have to ask: where does she go from here? “30 Rock” was obviously a show that was closely tied to her days working at “Saturday Night Live,” and we don’t know if she will be able to find something else that works from her own experiences to the same degree. However, there’s no question that she is a creative mind, and NBC would obviously love to work with her again. The real challenge for both parties is going to be trying to find a show this time that is not only funny, but also has the sort of broad appeal NBC is looking for now after years of struggling with lower ratings. (The ratings for last week proved that “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” like “30 Rock,” are slowly withering away.)
Ultimately, we would be stunned to see Fey with another TV show on the air in 2013, but we would not necessarily be shocked if she comes out swinging with a project that could make it onto the small screen by the time 2014 rolls around.
