Speaking to People Magazine in a new interview, former “The Facts of Life” star Lisa Whelchel revealed that prior to going on this upcoming season of “Survivor: Philippines” (where she survived in an exciting first week on the show) that she and her husband Steve Cauble had divorced after 24 years of marriage:
“The divorce was final on March 1, and [I] went out to be on Survivor on March 10 … Going out to Survivor was helpful for me, to divert my attention and not just dwell on the loss.
“I just never thought it would happen to me … It was painful to realize that it wasn’t going to work out.”
Even though the season premiere had already aired when Whelchel made these remarks, they still came as a surprise given that she never once spoke up during the episode about dealing with any trouble during her personal life. However, this could in some ways be due to her ability as a former child star to know how to keep certain parts of her life quiet. As a matter of fact, she tried to keep her television history quiet before Michael Skupin revealed to her that he knew who she was. Is this really a good strategy? Personally, we’re going to vote “no” since it creates an impression that you may be hiding something sinister unless you are really good at being open about your life while still leaving out a few details here and there.
Next week, we know that Lisa will have some struggles fitting in on a tribe that that contains younger women, and this could leave her at a crossroads in this game. Let’s just hope that this does not put her in the same sort of situation as Zane Knight, who was eliminated Wednesday night. (You can read our interview with him here.)
Are you surprised that Lisa was able to keep this quiet?
