Better Call Saul season 5: Should we get a full Gene episode?

Better Call Saul season 4
Do we understand that there’s a rather-long wait between now and when Better Call Saul season 5 premieres? Absolutely we do. It’s possible that it could be late 2019 or even 2020 before the series resurfaces on AMC, given the way in which the process has cycled out so far. Luckily, it’s always proven to be worth the wait and we’re more than happy to be patient.

Now, let’s take on the question that is always on our mind come hiatus: Is it possible that there could be a big Gene episode next year?

We know that, in some shape or form, we’ve been driving the bus on this for a while; yet, we do think that Gene is necessary as a driving force within the larger Better Call Saul story. We are, after all, taking about one of the few remaining mysteries that it out there. We’d put Gene’s future, in fact, even ahead of what happens with Kim Wexler. In the case of Rhea Seehorn’s character, there’s a chance that whatever happens to her prior to Breaking Bad does not impede her coming back down the road in the Gene timeline. With that in mind, all roads lead to the Cinnabon employee in Omaha.

The big reason to give us a large-scale episode here is to establish some sort of endgame, and to show that there may either be redemption or failure for Jimmy at the end of the day. (We like to think that there is redemption more so than anything else.) We suppose that the case against it is that this show is about the prequel more so than what happens afterwards with Gene, but if that was the case, why show us Gene at all? While we do think the flash-forwards are meant to mostly show the impact of his past on his present, the eagerness of exploring this timeline makes adding it to a personal wishlist unavoidable. Getting to understand this timeline feels almost essential to our feeling of satisfaction at the end of the series. We’ll always consider Better Call Saul great, but there’s untapped potential here that, if told properly, could move the series somehow up another level.
