‘Survivor: Philippines’ interview: Zane Knight ‘knew’ Russell Swan was leaving

It’s hard to be the first one to be eliminated from a reality competition show, and it’s even harder when you are eliminated after thinking that you were in control of the game and your own destiny. Sadly for Zane Knight, that is what happened on the Wednesday premiere of “Survivor: Philippines,” and the news is even sadder for us as someone who very much appreciated what he was bringing to the game.

We had a chance to get a few questions in with Zane during a conference call on Thursday, and it really just helped us to reaffirm what we in many ways already knew: this guy was entertainment gold, and it’s a pretty big loss to the show that he is gone already.

Cartermatt.com – You obviously sound like you’re a big fan of the show, so was it important to you to try and make a huge mark on the game almost right out of the gate?

Zane Knight – In this game, you only get few moments to make your mark and say that ‘this is mine,’ and to be one of those names you have to have a few big moves to go along with it. My plan from day one was to go out here and make it about me. You go hard or go home.

Did seeing all these returning players on past seasons make you more interested in getting them [or the celebrities] out early? I’m sure when you saw 15 players standing there that somebody was going to be coming back.

I was really hoping that it was going to be a newbie game. I saw Jeff Kent and I’m a baseball fan, but I didn’t know who he was. It never dawned on me that he was anybody. I thought honestly that he was a rancher or something, so I just thought he was a cowboy.

I was honestly hoping that from the beginning it was just us. When Jeff walked up and started talking, I was like ‘all right, here we go. The tribes are a little weird, but we can make it work.’

It looked like you thought you were staying in the game over Russell Swan, so had that happened did you already have an idea what your future plan was going to be?

If we had to, I was going to take one of the girls out. Russ was the muscle, so without him I would have had to keep Malcolm. I gotta correct you: I didn’t think [Russ] was going home; I knew he was going home. It was as big of a surprise to me as it was to anybody, bubba.

Do you think that Zane made some of the craziest moves that you have ever seen in this game, and will you miss him because of it? Be sure and visit our other article on this very subject over at the link here.
