NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Mycle Wastman steals the show with Al Green

The Voice” had a little bit of everything during Tuesday night’s new episode: there were “inspirational stories,” race car drivers, Blake Shelton trying to slander his fellow coaches, and even Cee Lo Green showing some of the competitive edge that he had been lacking early on this season.

As for the actual quality of the contestants, let’s just say that it was a little bit of a mixed bag.

Collin McLoughlin – The first good singer of the night was Collin, who had one of the best tones we have ever heard on the show before. Was he a little too mellow for his own good? Sure, but picking Adam Levine is the right move to cure that. Just look at what happened with Tony Lucca.

Joselyn Rivera – Anytime you audition with Kelly Clarkson, you have to be game to sing the song. To be honest, we probably would not have turned for Joselyn mostly because her pitch was a little all over the place. Did she hit some big notes? Sure, and we knew that she that she was going to pick Christina Aguilera the moment she turned around.

Benji – What? No last name? The only Benji that can get away with this is the dog. At least he sort of made up for this terrible decision with his moniker by being a pretty good singer. Adam’s flattery totally got through with this guy, and it probably makes some sense given how much these two are similar. He’s a genuinely good rock artist.

Lorraine Ferro – This is the one contestant we’re highlighting this week without a coach, and we have to say that the show ventured a little close to “American Idol” territory here in making it obvious that someone was not getting through.

Mycle Wastman – Speaking of strange names, this is the first time that we have ever heard Michael spelled quite like this. We also haven’t heard anyone sing like this all season. His take on Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” was pitch-perfect and soulful, and he ended up picking totally the right person in Cee Lo Green for his coach. Do we think that Cee Lo was really named after Al Green? Well…
