The second season of “Smash” just got a little bit more musical, and this time around it is courtesy of someone who was once considered the next big thing after starring the motion-picture revival of “Hairspray.”
Multiple sources have confirmed that Nikki Blonsky has landed some sort of recurring role in the drama series, which has developed a talent for rediscovery big names and putting them into roles (see Katharine McPhee). Unfortunately, there are no details available at this time for who the actress is going to play on the show.
However what we can say for sure at the moment is that Blonsky is joining a guest cast for this season that continues to get more impressive by the minute, and it is headlined by former “American Idol” star (and Oscar-winner) Jennifer Hudson along with Debra Messing former “Will & Grace” co-star Sean Hayes. With a new showrunner at the helm here in Josh Safran (“Gossip Girl”), the goal here seems to be pretty simply here: give the show as much of a fresh coat of paint as possible by shaking up the formula, adding new people, and hopefully developing a more cohesive feel for the show that is a little bit more about the stage, and a little less about what these people are doing to try and ruin each other’s lives away from it.
Are you glad to see Blonsky getting this sort of opportunity to show off her talent? Be sure to share your thoughts with a comment below, and we will have more news leading up to the show’s big return in early 2013.
