Did Lethal Weapon season 3 premiere work with Cole, without Riggs?

Lethal Weapon season 3

The Lethal Weapon season 3 has now officially come and gone, and we feel like it’s probably as polarizing as ever.

Yet, most of that polarization may come in part from viewers upset at the reaction to what happened away from the show, and our goal at this point is to separate any feelings about the drama of the summer from the show itself. These characters don’t deserve to be punished or evaluated differently; whether or not your desire to continue watching is impacted by everything that’s happened is your own prerogative.

What we can say for the show itself is this: The premiere did as good of a job as it could within the context of the story to say goodbye to Riggs, including showing Murtaugh in mourning over the loss of a friend. The story of the premiere itself did not treat what happened to Martin lightly, and really spent some time to deal with it. Whether or not that happens moving forward remains to be seen, but for this one episode we do feel like the writers did their best in order to integrate Riggs’ legacy and also try to push forward.

As for the debut of Seann William Scott as Wesley Cole, he works because he’s not doing an imitation of Riggs. If he didn’t have his own charm and crazy swagger, it’d feel almost more disrespectful to that character. Maybe Cole does bring a lighter tone here and there but Scott did a good job of translating the material and creating his own interesting person. It’s still too early to say if this new iteration will really work, but the action was still there and the premiere didn’t try to do too much. Bonus points for casting Psych actress Maggie Lawson as his ex Natalie, who could be one of the stabilizing forces in his life to go along with this new job that he has — it just remains to be seen if anything comes of this relationship.

Then again, it remains to be seen if enough viewers are going to give this new iteration of Lethal Weapon a chance.
