Is Downton Abbey really going to be going up for sale soon? We don’t know the answer to this question just yet, but it is just one of many issues discussed in the brand-new promo that has just been unveiled for the second episode of season 3.
Based on what has transpired thus far already, it looks like Grantham’s fortune has already all but run out courtesy of what happened with the fail Canadian rail investment, and it raises all sorts of questions that many of these people have never been forced to ask before. For example, what is there going to eat when the servants have nothing left to go? Where will these people go? Finally, how in the world will some of these folks so concerned with social stature find a way to keep the illusion going? If the first two seasons were about the creation of this world, season 3 may in many ways be the deconstruction of it.
Of course, this is not going to be the only subject tackled during this installment. In addition to seeing the aftermath of the Matthew / Mary nuptials, we will also have the continuation of the Bates storyline, and Shirley MacLaine’s Martha attempt to either entertain or distract some Downton guests from the troubles behind the scenes by engaging in a little bit of song and dance. When she was first cast on te show, we were worried that her name and her history were almost too big for her to fall into a role; however, she has turned out to be a perfect fit and a fascinating character to watch through and through.
