We’ve seen the tagline all over the place for “Boardwalk Empire” season 3 in “you can’t be half a gangster,” and with the show returning to HBO Sunday night, this phrase is finally going to be put to a real test. A full year is going to have passed from where we saw Nucky at the end of last season, and there is going to be quite a different place. Him killing Michael Pitt’s character by his own hand made him into a changed man … and thanks to that, we are about to see a man who is far more dangerous than anything that we saw from him before.
Speaking to TV Guide about what we can expect for this premiere, series creator Terence Winter had the following to say:
“Up until episode 12 of Season 2, we never really saw Nucky pull the trigger. He’s the guy who’s telling other people to do tha … Now, Nucky’s fully capable of both ordering people dead and killing them himself. He’s much more serious. He used to be a gangster and a gang leader one step removed. Now, he’s out from behind the desk and really getting his hands dirty.”
As for what is going to happen with Nucky’s new wife Margaret (Kelly Macdonald), we are also going to see her in a very different place as she tries to figure out a role for herself in the world of aviation:
“She’s sort of searching for something and she’s not really sure what … [She’s] soaring off into the unknown and courageously attempting this feat on her own, and Margaret’s [hoping] to do something meaningful in her own life.”
In the vein of another show that we covered earlier this summer in “Breaking Bad,” there is really no way that we can imagine what is happening on this show right now ending well. The real question that we have is just how long it is going to take Nucky to ultimately be handed his comeuppance.
